Maria Casares had an affair with French philosopher Albert Camus, often cited as a proponent of existentialism, the philosophy with which he was associated during his lifetime. Maria was named “The Muse of Existentialism” because of that.

But Camus rejected this particular label. In an interview in 1945, Camus said: “No, I am not an existentialist. Sartre and I are always surprised to see our names linked…”
